Yesterday I repotted some plants for a customer at Home Depot. If anyone has spent time with me they know that I can pretty much spiritualize anything. So here it is.
First I coaxed the mum out of its original pot. I had to be careful not to damage the plant holding it by its strongest point closest to the dirt. I picked her up

I was surprised at my own attempt at anthropomorphosis (50 point word bonus) but realized I was half correct in talking to it. This plant was a living breathing sun taking thing. I could smell the life in it, yes it smelled like dirt and standing water but there was life and that life was not only my responsibility but at my whim. With my care this new mum would achieve growth. The pot that was going to be its new home was a little bigger so the most important part of the process was next. When you repot a plant the most important part is cutting and tearing up the roots before putting it in the new pot. That mum had old roots to let go of and needed room to grow new roots. I took the hand shovel and dug it into many places in the big hunk of dirt that the roots were in and twisted and cut. Then I put my hand into it and broke much of it apart. When the roots were good and torn up in knew that the only way for this plant to survive was to be put into this other bigger pot. Not only would it survive but the roots would grow longer and deeper making the mum healthier and bigger.
Sometimes I get into seasons of life where I can feel that God is going to stretch me a little more. He cuts my roots of immaturity and plants me in a bigger pot of wisdom and humility. I have to re-evaluate who I am in Him and how far I think I can go with Him. Just when we think we have reached it He cuts our roots and repots us. He waits for us to out grow our original pot to the point where our roots will no longer grow and continues the process. There is no end. Our life in Him will not die for he is our caretaker. As long as the gospel continually waters our roots, we will continually grow. He will repot and cut our roots. So don’t be surprised when you hear Him…

Gardening is spiritual. I like the first paragraph here. But I think the whole "cutting off the roots and repotting" thing is more of a responsibility we have to ourselves. I'm not passive enough to surrender my life to God. (I'm glad He's looking after you though.)
Karen, I have seen God tackle the most impassive people...including myself.
